Clipper City Brewing Co. coming Nov. 4th
Shiver me friggin' timbers (sorry, just could pass it up.) It looks like Birmingham is going to get it's first batch of Clipper City Brewing Co's Heavy Seas line of beers
starting November 4th. The Heavy Seas line of beers are all greater than 7.0% ABV. There are 3 year round beers in this line: Loose Cannon American Hop3 ale, Peg Leg - Imperial Stout, and Small Craft Warning - Uber-Pils.
Loose Cannon is a burnt gold IPA that contains over 3 pounds of hops per barrel either via kettle, hop back, or dry hopping. This beer currently is rated a 98 over at RateBeer.com. 7.25% ABV
Peg Leg is an 8% deep mahogany imperial stout with aromas of roasted coffee, molasses and dark chocolate. Subtly hopped with Styrian Goldings, Fuggles, Magnum & Amarillo.
Small Craft Warning is classified as a imperial Pils/Strong Pale Lager that is pale with a strong malt backbone balanced with noble hops.
The Heavy Seas line also includes 5 season brews listed by calendar availability; February 9% Belgian Abbey style called Holy Sheet, late April is Red Sky at Night a Belgian style saison, July is the 10% German weizen Doppelbock called Hang Ten, October brings the Winter Storm, Thanksgiving finishes up the lineup with the 10% Below Decks barleywine.
Clipper City is also pretty well known for their cask ales. Hopefully we will begin to see a wide variety of their brews, whether cask, Clipper, Mutiny, or Pyrate fleet, in the Birmingham area very soon. I'm sure you'll be able to find a nice selection of these beers at the JClyde starting in early November (no, we're not paid to advertise for the bar.) We believe that a pirate themed party is in order to celebrate the arrival of yet another great brew. Here's to Birmingham and craft beer! IH

The beer is a dry Imperial Stout - creamy and rich with color as black as night. It has aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate, hints of molasses, toffee and caramel in the taste. Clipper City will produce only a small batch, so availability is extremely limited. AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20 PapaSkeetSkeet (153) - Hummelstown, Pennsylvania, USA - OCT 11, 2010 Pours black with a light brown head that quickly reduces to a thin film. Aroma is salty with light chocolate. Also slight bbq sauce. Flavor is charcoal, salt, piny resins, bitterness, chocolate, all hitting the palate at about the same time; lingers for a while fairly consistently. A little warming in the long aftertaste. Overall a good IS, although it doesn’t resemble a dry stout. I’m wondering why it scored so low and I’m guessing it’s due to the low abv (relatively). Nearing the end of the glass a smokiness stands out in the flavor and sweet coffee in the aroma.

AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 hypn0toad (57) - Maryland, USA - SEP 30, 2010 Not as good as the beer i just finished. For the lazy reader, the beer i just finished is also an imperial stout so I would recommend you drink that one instead. This beer comes in a fancy glass bottle (unlike the aforementioned better which only came in a simple non-glass can) but don’t let that fool you. The other beer is tastier. Yum! This one is okay. Not as chocolaty or coffee-ee. Still decent though.

AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bth122 (36) - Pennsylvania, USA - SEP 23, 2010 Poured into tall glass, little head that seemed to dissipate quickly. It came with a sampler case I got from this brewery. This was better than expected. Typical notes of coffee and chocolate present. A good bit of yeast at the bottom (which they advertise on the label).

AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bhensonb (5421) - Woodland, California, USA - AUG 30, 2010 Bottle from Bruisin ales. Pours black with a 3 finger foamy tan head. Smells creamy and burnt malt. Chocolate notes. Full bodied with foamy carbonation. Flavor is smooth burnt malt with some milky chocolate. It’s also a tad chalky. Very tasty. Tending more towards a sweet stout than a harsh imperial. Or not. It’s really very tasty. And that mild milk chocolate is kicky. Very nice.
